NEW YORK — A new organic food retailing space, dubbed the ‘Superfoods of the future’, is opening in New York’s financial district and is aiming to help the city grow its population, reduce pollution and become the “new Manhattan”.
The concept of the store, called the ‘New York City Superfood Market’, is the brainchild of former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who announced the store on Saturday as part of his ‘Million People’ initiative to encourage the creation of the city’s next generation of leaders.
De Blasio said the ‘superfood’ market would “provide a marketplace of the superfoods, including the organic and non-organic varieties, and provide them to consumers in a way that is more cost-effective.”
“The store is intended to encourage and facilitate the commercialization of a large number of products,” he said in a statement.
“Our aim is to create a better environment for the people of New York and the world, so that people in the future will not have to live in a climate where we are only one food away from the end of the world,” the mayor said.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has also announced that the state will invest $2 billion to expand and enhance public health infrastructure in the New York metropolitan area, with $2 million of the funds being allocated to the Superfood Markets.
In a statement, the SuperFood Markets project said it is targeting to “provid[e] a community-based market that is a nexus for local communities, businesses, and consumers to purchase and enjoy diverse foods and beverages.”
“It is critical that New York be a place that is affordable, affordable, and affordable for everyone,” the statement read.
Deets said the store will have “over 500 products that are designed to complement our city’s food system, offering an alternative to what you might find in a supermarket or fast-food restaurant.”
The store’s logo features an eagle on a black background and the words “superfood” in the top right corner, with a “B” above it.
Its products are “organic, locally grown, responsibly sourced, and produced in New Jersey,” according to its website.
The grocery store is expected to open in mid-January, and a Facebook page has been created for the store to share the latest news.
